About MamaCare

Bridging the Gap in Maternal Healthcare Delivery

MamaCare is a final-year Computer Science project developed at Gulu University. It addresses the critical gap in antenatal care record-keeping and follow-up in low-resource healthcare settings across Uganda.

  • Digitises all 8 WHO-recommended ANC contact records, replacing paper registers with structured, searchable data.
  • Automated SMS reminders via Africa's Talking ensure mothers never miss a critical visit date.
  • Real-time high-risk pregnancy flagging alerts midwives to patients who need urgent follow-up.
  • A mobile companion app keeps mothers informed about their pregnancy progress and next visit schedule.
  • Facility-level analytics and adherence reports support evidence-based decision making.
Core Features

Everything a Midwife Needs

From first booking visit to safe delivery — MamaCare covers the entire maternal care journey.

Patient Registration

Register mothers with full demographic details, LMP, expected delivery date, and assign a unique patient code linked to a facility.

ANC Visit Scheduling

Automatically generate all 8 WHO ANC contact dates from LMP. Track attendance, record clinical findings, and mark missed visits.

Emergency Alerts

Mothers and midwives can trigger emergency alerts. The system logs alert type, severity, and resolution for every incident.

SMS Reminders

Powered by Africa's Talking API, automated SMS messages remind mothers of upcoming visits and follow up on missed appointments.

Risk Classification

Pregnancies are classified as low, moderate, or high risk. High-risk patients are prominently flagged on the dashboard for immediate attention.

Analytics & Reports

Adherence trend charts, pregnancy stage distribution, facility-level reports, and exportable data give decision-makers the full picture.

How It Works

Simple for Midwives. Empowering for Mothers.

MamaCare follows the natural flow of antenatal care — no complex training required.

1
Register the Mother

Midwife records the patient's name, phone, LMP, facility, and risk level during the booking visit. The system generates all 8 ANC dates instantly.

2
Record Each Visit

At every visit, the clinician enters vitals — BP, weight, fundal height, foetal heart rate, lab results, and medications given — directly into MamaCare.

3
Automated Follow-Up

The system sends SMS reminders before each appointment. Missed visits trigger alerts. Mothers receive their health updates via the mobile app.

Mobile Application

Your Pregnancy Journey,
In Your Hands

The MamaCare mobile app puts pregnancy tracking, appointment reminders, and emergency alerts at every mother's fingertips — no matter how remote her location.

  • View all upcoming ANC visit dates and visit history
  • Receive push notifications and SMS reminders
  • Track pregnancy week, baby size, and growth milestones
  • One-tap emergency alert to your assigned midwife
  • Find the nearest ANC facility on an interactive map
  • Works offline — syncs when connectivity is restored

Testimonials

Trusted by Healthcare Workers

Hear from the midwives and clinicians who rely on MamaCare every day.

"Before MamaCare, we were tracking ANC visits in paper registers. We'd lose records, miss follow-ups, and have no idea which patients were high-risk. Now everything is digital and I get alerts directly on my phone."

"The SMS reminder feature alone has improved our attendance rate dramatically. Mothers who used to skip visits because they forgot the date now show up consistently. It's simple, reliable, and works on any phone."

"The dashboard gives me an instant overview of the whole facility — how many mothers are high-risk, who missed their visit this week, upcoming appointments. I used to spend an hour every morning reviewing paper files. Now it takes two minutes."
